Hasty Generalization

  • Example: Three congressional representatives have committed crimes. Therefore, members of Congress are criminals.

There are so many times we as people generalize and rationalize without even knowing it. Often people do not understand what they are saying is actually false and can be countered at any time.

Hasty generalizations are used a ton and people tend to use these generalization the most when they don't know the information themselves. For example when a couple of members of congress have committed a crime not all congress members are criminals. Rationalizing is another topic in which people tend to do a lot and it often used when they try and downplay a situation. For example when tripping and falling you make it seem as if you are ill to explain why you were clumsy and fell.

I encourage everyone to do your own research on these topics to make sure you fully understand what they mean and when other people are using them.
